Nature in the city - Brookmill Park, Deptford

The park with its nature areas provides an urban sanctuary for wildlife. Greenwich photographer Karin Tearle shares her pictures and invites you to visit.

A lovely little haven in the heart of Lewisham. I often sit on a log by the river and take in the tranquillity, hardly noticing the sound of the DLR as it trundles back and forth from Elverson Road station to Lewisham.

I read in Green Lewisham, Treasured Open Spaces by Candy Blackman, that Elverson Road takes its name from elvers, young eels which can still be found in the river. No wonder we have such an abundance of wildlife!

Candy Blackman says you may see 'the blue flash of a kingfisher', so imagine my delight at seeing this beauty sitting on a branch by the Ravensbourne river.

If you sit quietly at the riverbank, you may be lucky enough to see them.

A celandine signalling the spring - a symbol of hope and the coming of brighter days.

A little moorhen - you'll find lots of these here. I love to hear their chicken-like clucks, cackles and squawks echoing along the riverbank.

The park is well cared for by Friends of Brookmill Park, and easy to get to on the DLR to Elverson Road. Please do take a visit and stroll along the well-carved paths. It'll be worth your while.
